RAID Error Code Key Qualifiers
Luke Hebert
- 2 minutes read - 336 wordsWhen a RAID controller logs an error, the raw code alone rarely tells the whole story. The key qualifier is the part of the error code that narrows down what went wrong: a predictive failure, a media error, a link loss, a controller fault, and so on. Knowing how to read that qualifier saves you from swapping a perfectly good drive or chasing a phantom issue.
What Is a Key Qualifier?
In most enterprise RAID controllers (LSI, Broadcom, MegaRAID, and similar), an error code is composed of two parts:
- Error code – identifies the general category (disk failure, controller fault, cache error, etc.).
- Key qualifier – a sub-code that specifies the exact condition within that category.
For example, a “disk failure” error code might carry different key qualifiers for:
- Predictive failure (SMART threshold exceeded)
- Hard failure (drive unresponsive)
- Media error (read/write CRC mismatch)
- Link loss (SAS/SATA cable or backplane issue)
Why It Matters
Two drives can both report a “disk failure” error code, but one may be a dying drive that needs replacement while the other is a loose cable that just needs reseating. The key qualifier is what separates those two scenarios.
How to Find the Key Qualifier
- Open your RAID management utility (MegaCLI, storcli, HPE Smart Storage Administrator, Dell OMSA, etc.).
- Navigate to the event log or error history.
- Look for a secondary code, sub-code, or qualifier field next to the primary error code.
- Cross-reference it with your controller vendor’s error code table.
Vendor documentation for key qualifiers is often buried in a separate “Error Code Reference” PDF rather than the main user guide. Search your controller model number plus “error code reference” to find the right document.
Quick Tips
- Always record the full error string (code + qualifier + timestamp) before clearing the log.
- If the qualifier points to a link or backplane issue, check cabling before replacing the drive.
- Some controllers expose qualifiers via CLI:
storcli /c0 /eall /vallwill list per-element status including qualifier details.
